“Academic Center” (AC)
AC's purpose is to eliminate “zeros” as grades for missing assignments by assuring that students complete all the work that is assigned to them. Please read through the description of the program below. Feel free to contact me at 624 7601 if you have any questions.
Background and Purpose
AC is a program designed to increase expectations of students who habitually, or occasionally, fail to complete and turn in assignments on time and satisfactorily. It is first and foremost an expectation of high academic standards for all students. AC, which involves the middle school, clearly emphasizes the belief that assignments/projects are important and must be completed. This program will direct students to utilize their abilities to acquire self-discipline and work habits that will serve them in an educational setting and hopefully in the future when they enter their next educational environment or workplace.
The AC program is not a form of punishment. Rather, it is a program designed to send a message that failure is not acceptable.
The AC Room
The AC room will be open 5 days per week during all lunch periods. Students who do not turn in a class assignment satisfactorily and on time may be assigned to the AC room by their teacher for the following day. If the student is able to complete the assignment and turn it in to the office before 8:00 the next morning, the student will not be required to report to the AC room. Otherwise, the student will be required to report to the AC room during his/her lunch period to complete the assignment. It will then be the student’s responsibility to:
Students in the AC room will be provided lunch from the middle school food service department; however, parents always have the option of supplying their son/daughter with a lunch from home.

Otherwise, the student will be required to report to the AC room during his/her lunch period to complete the assignment. It will then be the student’s responsibility to:
- Complete the assignment while in the AC room
- Submit the completed assignment to the AC room supervisor
- Sit quietly in the AC room for the duration of the lunch period
Students in the AC room will be provided lunch from the middle school food service department; however, parents always have the option of supplying their son/daughter with a lunch from home.
Important Notes
- The expectation is that all students will turn in all assignments. Students who are failing and have missing assignments will continue to be assigned to the AC room, every day, until he/she is passing their classes.
- It is possible that the assignment to be completed in the AC room will require the use of a computer or other equipment that won’t be available in the AC room. In these cases, the student is still expected to report to the AC room as assigned, but the student may actually need to complete the assignment at a different time (e.g., after school).
- Students who repeatedly get assigned to the AC room and continue to fail to complete their assignments will be assigned to after school detention or other form of consequence in addition to being assigned to the AC room.
- Students who report to the AC room without the necessary materials to complete their assignment will not be permitted to leave the room to retrieve the materials.
- Students that fail to report to the AC room as assigned will receive a discipline write-up and will be assigned to after-school detention or other forms of consequences. The student will still need to report to AC on the following day.
- Students are to remain quiet in the AC room unless they are asking a question that is specific to their assignment. Any other talking or disruptive behavior will result in a disciplinary write-up.
- Students that are absent must get the assignments that they missed from their teachers on the day that they return to school, if not sooner. These assignments must be completed and turned in according to the teachers’ class policy. Typically one or two extra days will be given to turn in assignments. Failure to turn in the assignments in this time period may result in an assignment to the AC room.
- Deadlines are important, and the AC program is not designed to minimize the value of meeting due dates and deadlines. As such, assignments that are not turned in on time will not receive full credit. The maximum credit that a student can receive for a late assignment is 80% of the points possible. Teachers are permitted to have policies that award less than 80% credit for late assignments.
